The Assumption of Mary is a Catholic and Orthodox belief that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was taken into heaven after her death. The assumption is based on biblical passages, including Luke 1:39–56, which describes Mary’s visit to Elizabeth; and John 19:25–27, which describes Jesus’ discussion of his mother’s future with the disciple John at the crucifixion.
The doctrine was defined as a dogma, or teaching, of the Catholic Church by Pope Pius XII in his 1950 encyclical Munificentissimus Deus. The Eastern Orthodox Churches, which accept the teachings of the Council of Chalcedon, celebrate the Dormition of the Theotokos (the “falling asleep” of Mary), rather than her Assumption.
