History of Benjamin Banneker Week and How to Celebrate/ Observe It

Benjamin Banneker Week is a time to celebrate the achievements of this African American mathematician, surveyor, almanac author and farmer. Born in 1731 in Maryland, Banneker was self-educated and went on to survey the lands that would become Washington D.C. He also published a popular almanac and corresponded with Thomas Jefferson about the principles of freedom and equality. In recognition of Banneker’s contributions, many schools and organizations hold special events during Benjamin Banneker Week. These may include lectures, exhibits, film screenings and community service projects.
