History of Day of the Capital in Kazakhstan and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
The Day of the Capital is a public holiday in Kazakhstan, celebrated on June 6. It commemorates the day in 1991 when Almaty was designated as the country’s new capital city. The holiday was established in 1992 and has been celebrated annually ever since.
Almaty is Kazakhstan’s largest city and was the country’s capital until 1997, when the capital was moved to Astana (now known as Nur-Sultan). The decision to move the capital was made by then-President Nursultan Nazarbayev, and was motivated by a desire to develop the less-populated northern part of the country.
Despite no longer being the capital, Almaty remains an important economic and cultural center, and the Day of the Capital is still widely celebrated there. On this day, citizens take part in various activities and events, including concerts, parades, and firework displays.
