History of Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe in Mexico and How to Celebrate/ Observe It

The Virgin of Guadalupe is a religious icon in Mexico that is said to have appeared to a peasant man named Juan Diego in the early 1500s. The story goes that the Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego and asked him to build a church in her honor on the spot where they were standing. Juan Diego took her request to the local Bishop, but he was skeptical and demanded proof. Juan Diego then returned to the spot where he had seen the Virgin and she gave him a cloak (or tilma) with her image imprinted on it. When Juan Diego presented the cloak to the Bishop, the image of the Virgin was miraculously present and the Bishop agreed to build the church.

The Virgin of Guadalupe is now one of the most important religious icons in Mexico and her feast day, December 12th, is celebrated with great pomp and circumstance. Many Mexicans believe that the Virgin of Guadalupe is a symbol of hope and protection, and her image can be found in homes, churches, and public spaces all over the country.
