In 1905, the union between Norway and Sweden was dissolved after over four hundred years. The two countries had been in a personal union since 1814, but rising nationalist sentiment on both sides led to increasing tensions. In 1904, negotiations between the two countries broke down, and Norway held a referendum on independence. The vote was narrowly in favor of independence, and on 7 June 1905 Norway formally declared its independence. Sweden did not recognize the independence immediately, but the two countries later reached an agreement and signed the Treaty of Karlstad, which recognized Norway’s independence.
