History of Gunpowder Day and How to Celebrate/ Observe It

In the United Kingdom, Gunpowder Day is celebrated on November 5. This holiday commemorates the failed attempt by Guy Fawkes to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605. Fawkes was a member of a group of Catholic conspirators who wanted to overthrow the Protestant government. The plot was uncovered and Fawkes was arrested before he could carry out his plan. Gunpowder Day is also known as Guy Fawkes Day and Bonfire Night. On this day, people gather around bonfires to burn effigies of Fawkes. Fireworks are also set off to mark the occasion.
