History of International Women’s Day in South Sudan and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
In South Sudan, International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate the progress that has been made for women’s rights, and to call for further action to ensure equality for women. It is also a time to reflect on the challenges faced by women in South Sudan, and to commit to working together to address them.
The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is “Equality for Women is Progress for All”. This echoes the sentiment of the recent UN General Assembly resolution on the elimination of all forms of discrimination and violence against women and girls, which recognises that gender equality is essential for achieving sustainable development.
In South Sudan, women face many challenges. They are often excluded from decision-making processes, and have limited access to education, health care and economic opportunities. Gender-based violence is also a serious problem, with women and girls being subjected to sexual violence, forced marriage and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
Despite these challenges, there have been some positive developments for women in South Sudan. In 2015, the government adopted a National Action Plan on UN Security Council Resolution 1325, which calls for increased participation of women in peace and security efforts. And last year, a new law was passed criminalising FGM.
On International Women’s Day, let’s celebrate these achievements, and commit to working together to achieve equality for all women and girls in South Sudan.
