The March equinox is the moment when the Sun crosses the celestial equator – the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s Equator – from south to north. This happens on about March 20-21 every year.
In the Northern Hemisphere, the March equinox marks the first day of spring (vernal equinox). In the Southern Hemisphere, it’s the first day of autumn (autumnal equinox).
Around the time of the March equinox, day and night are nearly equal in length all over the world. The word “equinox” comes from the Latin words aequus (equal) and nox (night).
On the day of the March equinox, the Sun rises in the east and sets in the west, just as it does any other day of the year. But on this day, the Sun rises precisely due east and sets precisely due west.
This is because, on the day of the March equinox, the Earth’s axis is tilted neither toward nor away from the Sun. The Earth’s axis is always tilted at an angle of about 23.5 degrees from the perpendicular to the plane of the Earth’s orbit around the Sun. But on the day of the March equinox, the Earth’s axis is pointing neither toward nor away from the Sun.
