The Martyrs of Independence Day are a group of Congolese soldiers who were killed during the Congo Crisis. The Crisis began when Congolese troops mutinied against their Belgian officers in July 1960. The mutiny quickly spread to other military units and soon the entire Congo was in a state of chaos. The Belgian government then sent in troops to restore order. However, the Congolese soldiers continued to fight and many were killed in the process.
