Mozambican Heroes Day is a national holiday in Mozambique that commemorates the country’s heroes. It is celebrated on 3 September, the date of the death of Eduardo Mondlane, the founder and first president of the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO).
Mondlane was assassinated by a parcel bomb in 1969, while leading FRELIMO’s fight against Portuguese colonial rule. His death was a major blow to the independence movement, but FRELIMO continued the struggle and eventually achieved independence in 1975.
Mozambican Heroes Day celebrates the sacrifices made by Mondlane and other Mozambican heroes in the fight for independence. It is also a day for reflecting on the country’s post-independence challenges, such as the civil war that broke out after independence and the ongoing struggle to reduce poverty and improve living standards.
