In Tunisia, Revolution Day is celebrated on January 14th, marking the anniversary of the country’s 2011 revolution. The day is also known as Youth Day, as it was young Tunisians who played a leading role in the uprising that ousted longtime President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. The revolution began on December 17th, 2010, when a 26-year-old street vendor named Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire in protest of police harassment. Bouazizi’s act of self-immolation sparked a nationwide uprising, with young Tunisians at the forefront of the protests. On January 14th, 2011, President Ben Ali fled the country, and Tunisia became the first Arab state to overthrow its leader in the so-called “Arab Spring.” In the years since the revolution, Tunisia has made significant progress in transitioning to democracy, but the country faces ongoing challenges, including high unemployment and economic inequality.
