History of World Day for International Justice and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
The World Day for International Justice is celebrated every year on July 17th. The day was established by the United Nations in 2002 to mark the anniversary of the entry into force of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. The World Day for International Justice is an opportunity to reflect on the progress made in the fight against impunity and to reaffirm our commitment to end impunity for the most serious crimes of concern to the international community.
The Rome Statute is the treaty that established the International Criminal Court (ICC), the world’s first permanent international court mandated to investigate and prosecute individuals accused of the most serious crimes of concern to the international community, including genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes.
The ICC is an independent, international institution, and its seat is at The Hague in the Netherlands. The Court’s jurisdiction is triggered only when national courts are unwilling or unable to investigate or prosecute such crimes.
The ICC is a court of last resort, complementing the work of national courts.
