History of National Women’s History Month and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
National Women’s History Month is an annual celebration of the achievements of women throughout history. It is observed every year in the month of March.
The idea for a national women’s history month originated in Sonoma County, California, in 1978. A group of women there launched a “Women’s History Week” celebration. The week was so successful that it expanded into a month-long event the following year. In 1987, Congress officially designated March as National Women’s History Month.
Each year, the President issues a proclamation honoring the accomplishments of women in America. Organizations across the country also hold events and activities to celebrate National Women’s History Month.
During National Women’s History Month, we remember the struggles and the successes of the women who have shaped our country. We honor their accomplishments and recommit ourselves to working for a more just and equal society.
