In 1979, the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) overthrew the Somoza dictatorship in Nicaragua. The Sandinistas governed Nicaragua from 1979 to 1990 and instituted a number of socialist reforms. The Reagan administration opposed the Sandinistas and supported the Contra rebel group, which waged a bloody war against the Nicaraguan government. In 1990, the Sandinistas lost power in elections and the Contra war came to an end. The Sandinista Revolution Day is celebrated every year on July 19th.
