History of Virgin of the Plains in Spain and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
The Virgin of the Plains is a Marian apparition that occurred in the Spanish town of Zumárraga on December 12, 1531. Juan Diego, a local peasant, was walking along the road to Tlatelolco when he saw a bright light in the distance. As he approached, he saw that the light was coming from a beautiful woman standing on a hill. The woman asked him to go to the nearby town of Zumárraga and tell the bishop to build a church in her honor.
Juan Diego went to the bishop, but the bishop did not believe his story. Juan Diego then had a vision of the Virgin Mary, who told him to return to the bishop and show him the roses that he was carrying in his cloak. When Juan Diego opened his cloak, the roses fell to the ground and an image of the Virgin Mary was revealed on the fabric. The bishop was so moved by this miracle that he ordered the construction of the church, which was later named Our Lady of Guadalupe.
