The United States Air Force (USAF) is the aerial warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces. It is one of the five branches of the United States Armed Forces, and one of the seven American uniformed services. Initially part of the United States Army, the USAF was formed as a separate branch of the military on 18 September 1947 under the National Security Act of 1947. It is the second youngest branch of the U.S. Armed Forces and the fourth in order of precedence. The USAF is headquartered at the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and its combat forces are divided into ten active duty Specialty Code (AFSC) categories and several wing-level organizations.

The USAF operates more than 5,369 military aircraft, 406 ICBMs, and 170 satellites. The service has 323,142 active duty personnel, 84,000 reservists, and 105,000 air National Guard personnel. It employs a full-time civilian workforce of around 377,600 people.
