History of All Saints Day in Bolivia and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
All Saints Day, or “Dia de los Santos,” is celebrated annually on November 1st in Bolivia. The holiday commemorates all saints, known and unknown, who have gone before us. Families visit cemeteries to pray for and remember their deceased loved ones. Graves are often decorated with flowers, wreaths, and candles.
In addition to honoring individual saints, All Saints Day is also a time to celebrate the Virgin Mary. Statues and portraits of the Virgin Mary are taken out of churches and carried in procession through the streets. Many towns and villages have their own unique traditions associated with the holiday.
One of the most popular traditions is the “callejoneada.” This is when a group of people walk through the streets singing and playing music. The group is led by a man dressed as a devil who tries to tempt them with alcohol and cigarettes. If they resist, they are said to be blessed with good luck for the year ahead.
