In New Zealand, April Fools’ Day is celebrated much the same way as it is in other parts of the world. People play practical jokes on each other and try to make them look foolish. The media also gets involved, with radio stations and newspapers playing tricks on their listeners and readers.
One of the most famous April Fools’ pranks in New Zealand was when the national radio station, Radio Hauraki, announced that they were going to start broadcasting in colour. Of course, this was impossible at the time, as colour television had not yet been invented. Another popular prank was when a newspaper published a fake story about a new type of bird that could fly backwards.
