The third Druk Gyalpo, or Dragon King, of Bhutan was born on November 2, 1929. He was the son of Ugyen Wangchuck, the first Druk Gyalpo, and his wife, Ashi Kesang Choden Wangchuck. Jigme Dorji Wangchuck succeeded his father as Druk Gyalpo in 1952, and ruled Bhutan until his death in 1972. Under his leadership, Bhutan began to modernize, opening its borders to the outside world and adopting a constitution. The Third Druk Gyalpo’s birth anniversary is still celebrated in Bhutan as National Day.
