Kim Jong Il was born on February 16, 1942, in the village of Vyatskoye, in the Soviet Union. His father, Kim Il Sung, was North Korea’s first leader, and his mother, Kim Jong Suk, was a Korean guerrilla fighter during the Japanese occupation. Jong Il’s childhood was one of privilege; he attended the best schools and was groomed for leadership from an early age.
As a young man, Jong Il held a variety of government posts, including director of the Organization and Guidance Department of the Workers’ Party of Korea and supreme commander of the Korean People’s Army. In 1994, he succeeded his father as North Korea’s leader.
Under Jong Il’s rule, North Korea remained isolated from the rest of the world and continued to pursue its goal of developing nuclear weapons. The country also experienced severe economic hardship, due in part to the loss of Soviet support after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
In October 2006, Jong Il announced that he had test-fired a nuclear weapon, making North Korea the ninth country in the world to possess nuclear weapons. The international community responded with condemnation and increased economic sanctions.
Jong Il died of a heart attack on December 17, 2011. He was succeeded by his son, Kim Jong Un.
