The Black Saturday incident in the Philippines happened on August 2, 2008. It was a day of mourning for many as a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit the island of Mindanao. The death toll from the quake and the resulting landslides and tsunamis was estimated to be over 1,000. More than 2,000 people were injured and hundreds of thousands were left homeless. The city of Cagayan de Oro was the hardest hit, with more than half of the city’s buildings destroyed. Rescue efforts were hampered by the lack of heavy equipment and personnel.
