Patrice Emery Lumumba was a Congolese independence leader and the first democratically elected Prime Minister of the Congo. He played a pivotal role in Congo’s struggle for independence from Belgium. In 1960, Lumumba was assassinated by Belgian and Congolese soldiers under the orders of then-President Joseph Mobutu.
In honor of Lumumba’s legacy, the Central African Republic celebrates Patrice Lumumba Day on January 17th each year. The holiday commemorates Lumumba’s life and work as well as the Congo’s struggle for independence. On Patrice Lumumba Day, schools across the country hold special events and lessons to teach children about Lumumba’s life and his importance to the Congo’s history.
