The General Don Martín Miguel de Güemes is commemorated in Argentina for his role in the Argentine War of Independence. He was born in 1785 in Tucumán and died in 1821 in Salta. He is considered a national hero for his defense of the northwestern provinces of Argentina against the Spanish royalists. A bust of him was erected in the square named after him in Salta, and his image appears on the 10 peso bill.
