History of Dashain in Bhutan and How to Celebrate/ Observe It

Dashain is the biggest and most important festival in Bhutan. It is celebrated for 15 days, starting on the 10th day of the Bhutanese lunar month. The main event of the festival is when people visit their family homes and offer prayers and gifts to the elders.

On the first day of Dashain, people start preparing for the festival by cleaning their houses and decorating them with traditional Bhutanese paintings called tshechu. On the tenth day, people start gathering at their family homes and temples to offer prayers and make offerings. The eleventh day is when the main event takes place, which is when people visit the homes of their elders and offer them blessings and gifts. On the twelfth day, people visit local monasteries and offer prayers for the wellbeing of all sentient beings. The thirteenth day is when people start making preparations for the return journey home. On the fourteenth day, people pack their belongings and start heading home. The fifteenth day is when people finally arrive home and celebrate with their family and friends.
