In 1992, the Day of the Declaration of Slovakia as an Independent Ecclesiastic Province was established by the Slovak Parliament. The holiday commemorates the day in 863 when the brothers Cyril and Methodius, whose work helped spread Christianity throughout Slavic lands, were declared saints by the Pope. It also celebrates the establishment of the independent Slovak Catholic Church in 1938.
