On May 28, 1991, the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) captured the capital city of Addis Ababa from the Derg regime, effectively ending Communist rule in Ethiopia. The fall of the Derg regime was marked by a series of mass executions, known as the “Red Terror.” An estimated 500,000 people were killed during the Red Terror, many of them civilians. The EPRDF promised to bring democracy to Ethiopia, but the country remains mired in poverty and conflict.
