Baptism is the act of applying water to the forehead of a person in order to purify them and welcome them into the Christian faith. In Serbia, the Orthodox Church is the predominant religion, and baptism is an important sacrament within the church. On the first day of baptism, the godparents of the child being baptized will bring them to the church. The priest will then bless the water and make the Sign of the Cross over the child. The godparents will then hold the child as the priest pours water over their head three times, saying each time, “In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.” After the baptism, the child will be given a new name, which is usually chosen by the godparents. The child will then be wrapped in a white cloth and presented to the congregation.
