The city of Panama was founded on August 15, 1519, by Spanish explorer Pedro Arias Dávila. The city was the starting point for expeditions that conquered the Inca Empire in Peru. It was also a stopover point on the Spanish Main, a route that connected Spain with its colonies in the New World. The city flourished during the 16th and 17th centuries, but it was destroyed by a fire in 1737. It was rebuilt and became an important port city once again. In 1821, Panama became part of the newly independent country of Colombia. But in 1903, Panama declared its independence from Colombia and became a separate country.
