The Foundation of Quito in Ecuador is one of the most important events in the country’s history. It occurred on December 6, 1534, when a group of Spanish settlers led by Gonzalo Pizarro and Francisco Pizarro arrived in the area and founded the city of San Francisco de Quito. The new city was named after Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of Spain.
