The German Beer Day is celebrated on April 23rd every year. It commemorates the day in 1516 when the Bavarian Reinheitsgebot, or “purity law”, was established. This law stipulated that beer could only be made with water, barley and hops. Yeast was not yet known at that time, so it was not included in the ingredients list.
The Reinheitsgebot is still in effect today, and is one of the reasons why German beer is so highly regarded. It ensures that only the finest ingredients are used in the brewing process, and that no shortcuts are taken.
