Independence Day in Liberia is celebrated on July 26, commemorating the day in 1847 when Liberia declared its independence from the American Colonization Society. Liberia is Africa’s oldest modern republic and the only country on the continent founded by African Americans. A small group of free blacks from the United States founded Liberia in an effort to create a new homeland for former slaves and their descendants. The country’s flag and national anthem reflect its origins, with the red and white stripes of the flag representing the 11 signers of the Liberian Declaration of Independence and the single star representing the African continent.
