Panama was part of the Spanish empire since the arrival of Columbus in 1502. For centuries, Panama was a transit point for goods being shipped to and from Spain’s colonies in South America.
In the early 1800s, Panama was part of the Viceroyalty of New Granada, which also included present-day Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela. The people of Panama were discontent with Spanish rule and the high taxes they had to pay. In 1820, a group of Panamanian intellectuals and businessmen met in the city of Panama and formed a secret society called La Sociedad de los Patriotas (Society of Patriots).
The Society of Patriots organized a revolt against the Spanish authorities in Panama. On November 10, 1821, the rebels took control of the city of Panama. The Spanish governor fled. On November 28, 1821, the Congress of Panama declared Panama’s independence from Spain.
Panama became part of the newly independent country of Colombia in 1821. However, Panama soon broke away from Colombia and became an independent country in 1903.
