Let's dive deeper into learning more about the history of International Disability Day and why people celebrate or observe it.
History of International Disability Day and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
The United Nations’ (UN) International Day of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated on December 3 each year. The day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.
The observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities was proclaimed in 1992 by UN General Assembly resolution 47/3. December 3 was chosen as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities because it was the date in 1982 when the General Assembly adopted the Declaration on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
The theme for 2018 is “Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality”.
