History of International No Diet Day and How to Celebrate/ Observe It

In May 1985, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution recognizing the importance of nutrition and physical activity in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The resolution also recognized the need for Americans to be aware of the dangers of dieting and eating disorders. In response to this resolution, the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD) established International No Diet Day.

International No Diet Day is observed on May 6th each year. The day is intended to serve as a reminder that good health does not come from a number on a scale. Rather, good health is achieved through a balanced diet and regular exercise.

The day also seeks to raise awareness of the dangers of dieting and eating disorders. ANAD estimates that as many as 24 million Americans suffer from an eating disorder. Of these, 10 million are women and 1 million are men. Eating disorders can lead to serious health problems, including malnutrition, organ damage, and even death.

Those who observe International No Diet Day are encouraged to pledge to never diet again. They are also encouraged to spread the word about the dangers of dieting and eating disorders.
