John Chilembwe Day is a public holiday in Malawi which commemorates the life and work of John Chilembwe, a Baptist minister and national hero who led an uprising against British colonial rule in 1915. Chilembwe was born in 1871 in Nyasaland (now Malawi) and educated in the United States. He returned to Nyasaland in 1900 and became a leading voice in the movement for independence from British rule. In 1915, he led an uprising against the colonial authorities, but it was quickly crushed. Chilembwe was killed in the fighting, but his memory has been honoured with a public holiday in Malawi.
