History of June Solstice in Sint Maarten and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
The June Solstice occurs when the sun is directly overhead at the Tropic of Cancer. This happens once a year in late June, and marks the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere and winter in the Southern Hemisphere. The word “solstice” comes from the Latin solstitium, meaning “sun standing still.” At the solstice, the sun’s zenith (highest point in the sky) is at its northernmost point, and it appears to stand still in the sky before reversing direction and beginning to move southward again.
