When Queen Beatrix became queen, she chose to keep the holiday on April 30, her mother’s birthday. In 2013, when King Willem-Alexander ascended to the throne, the holiday was moved to his birthday, April 27.

King’s Day is a day of celebration, with parties and street markets held throughout the country. Orange is the color of the Dutch royal family, and is often worn on King’s Day.
