History of Kosrae Liberation Day in Micronesia and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
Kosrae Liberation Day is a public holiday in the Federated States of Micronesia, observed on March 26. It commemorates the day in 1947 when Kosrae, then known as Kusaie, was formally annexed to the United States and became a part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands.
The island had been under German control from 1899 until 1914, when it was captured by Japan during World War I. Japan administered the island as part of the South Seas Mandate until the end of World War II, when it was again occupied by the United States.
Under the terms of the trusteeship agreement, the United States was responsible for the administration and defense of the trust territory, which included Kosrae. On March 26, 1947, the United States formally annexed Kosrae and made it a part of the trust territory.
In 1979, the Federated States of Micronesia, of which Kosrae is a part, was established as an independent country. Kosrae Liberation Day is therefore a day of celebration for the people of Kosrae and a reminder of their island’s rich history.
