Louis Riel was a Canadian politician, a founder of the province of Manitoba, and a leader of the Métis people of the Canadian prairies. He led two resistance movements against the Canadian government: the first in 1869–70, known as the Red River Rebellion, and the second in 1885, known as the North-West Rebellion. Riel was arrested and tried for treason in 1885, and was executed by the Canadian government.
