Macau S.A.R. Establishment Day commemorates the day that Macau became a Special Administrative Region of China. The holiday is celebrated on December 20th each year.
On December 20, 1999, the Chinese government and the Portuguese government signed an agreement which stated that Macau would be returned to China on December 20, 1999. This agreement ended over 400 years of Portuguese rule in Macau.
The transfer of sovereignty ceremony took place on December 20, 1999 and was attended by then Chinese President Jiang Zemin and then Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres. As part of the ceremony, the Chinese and Portuguese flags were lowered and the flag of the Macau Special Administrative Region was raised.
