History of Mahasivarathri Day in Sri Lanka and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
Mahasivarathri is a religious festival celebrated by Hindus in Sri Lanka. The festival is dedicated to Lord Shiva and falls on the 13th night/14th day of the Maargazhi month of the Tamil calendar (corresponding to February/March in the Western calendar). On this day, devotees observe a fast and perform special puja (worship) rituals to Lord Shiva. Many also visit Shiva temples across the island to offer their prayers.
The Mahasivarathri festival has great significance in Hinduism. It is believed that on this day, Lord Shiva destroyed the ego of demon king Ravana.
