History of March Equinox in Hungary and How to Celebrate/ Observe It

March equinox in Hungary occurs when the sun is directly over the equator and day and night are of equal length. This happens on March 20 or 21 every year. In Hungary, the March equinox is called “Vernal Equinox”. Vernal is another word for spring.

On the day of the Vernal Equinox, the sun rises due east and sets due west. This is different than any other day of the year when the sun’s path across the sky is slightly tilted. The word “equinox” comes from two Latin words: aequus meaning “equal” and nox meaning “night”. So, the March equinox is literally the “equal night” when day and night are the same length.

In Hungary, the first day of spring is also celebrated on the Vernal Equinox. This holiday is called “Mezőszentgyörgyi Napok” and it celebrates the start of the agricultural season. People dress up in traditional Hungarian clothing and there are folk dances and music. There are also special foods that are only eaten on this day.
