History of March Equinox in Nepal and How to Celebrate/ Observe It

The March equinox occurs when the sun is directly over the equator and day and night are of equal length. In Nepal, this happens around March 20 or 21. The days leading up to the equinox are called Maha Shivaratri, or the “Great Night of Shiva.” This is a Hindu festival that celebrates the god Shiva.

People all over Nepal celebrate Maha Shivaratri by fasting, praying, and offering special puja (worship) to Shiva. Some people spend the entire night awake, chanting Shiva’s name or reading religious texts. On the day of the equinox, many people visit temples and offer flowers, fruits, and sweets to Shiva.

After the equinox, the days begin to get longer, as the sun moves north of the equator. This signals the start of spring in Nepal.
