History of Martyrs’ Day in Azerbaijan and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
Martyrs’ Day is a public holiday in Azerbaijan, commemorating the death of Azerbaijani soldiers during the Nagorno-Karabakh War. It is observed on 26 February.
The Nagorno-Karabakh War was fought from 1988 to 1994 between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the self-proclaimed Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh, an enclave within Azerbaijan. The war resulted in the displacement of over a million people and the death of over 30,000.
Azerbaijan observes Martyrs’ Day with a moment of silence, followed by the laying of wreaths at the Alley of Martyrs in Baku. Memorial services are also held throughout the country.
