Martyrs’ Day is a public holiday in Malawi that commemorates the country’s struggle for independence. It is observed on 6 July, the anniversary of the death of John Chilembwe, a nationalist leader who was killed during the colonial era.
Malawi gained independence from Britain in 1964, after many years of struggle. The holiday is a time to remember those who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the country. John Chilembwe is considered a national hero for his role in the fight against colonialism. He was killed by British soldiers in 1915, after leading an uprising against the colonial government.
