History of Martyrs’ Day in Tunisia and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
In Tunisia, Martyrs’ Day is observed on 9 April to commemorate those who have died in the struggle for Tunisia’s independence. The day is also known as Independence Day, as it marks the date when Tunisia gained independence from France in 1956. On Martyrs’ Day, Tunisians visit the graves of the martyrs and lay wreaths or flowers. A minute of silence is observed at midday, and the national flag is flown at half-mast. In the evening, there is a torchlight procession and a fireworks display.
