Meskel is a religious holiday celebrated in Ethiopia. It commemorates the discovery of the True Cross, on which Jesus was crucified, by Queen Helena of Constantinople in the 4th century.
On Meskel, a large bonfire is built and burned in honor of the event. People gather around the fire to sing and dance. A procession is also held, led by a priest carrying a cross.
