History of Muharram in Comoros and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar. It is one of the four sacred months of the year. The other three are Rajab, Dhu al-Qi’dah, and Dhu al-Hijjah. Muharram is a time of remembrance and mourning for the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. Hussain was killed at the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. His death is commemorated during the first ten days of Muharram, known as the Days of Ashura. Shia Muslims perform public processions and self-flagellation to mourn Hussain’s death. Sunni Muslims fast and pray during this period.
