History of Muharram in Libya and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar. It is one of the four sacred months of the year. The other three are Rajab, Dhu al-Qi’dah and Dhu al-Hijjah. Muharram is a time of remembrance and mourning for the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. Imam Hussain and his family were killed by the ruling Umayyad Caliph, Yazid, in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. The battle took place in present-day Iraq. Every year, on the anniversary of the battle, Shia Muslims in Libya and around the world hold processions and marches to commemorate Imam Hussain’s martyrdom.
