National American Teddy Bear Day is celebrated every year on September 9th. This special day was created to honor the beloved teddy bear and to encourage people of all ages to hug their teddy bears!
The history of the teddy bear is interesting. The very first teddy bear was actually created in 1902 by President Theodore Roosevelt. The story goes that during a hunting trip, Roosevelt was unable to find any animals to shoot. One of his companions caught a small black bear and tied it to a tree, offering it to the president as a target. Roosevelt refused to shoot the bear, saying that it would be unsportsmanlike.
Later, a political cartoonist drew a cartoon of the incident, which showed Roosevelt sparing the bear’s life. This cartoon was so popular that toy companies began making teddy bears. And thus, the teddy bear was born!
Nowadays, teddy bears are enjoyed by people of all ages all over the world. They are often given as gifts to show love and appreciation, and are also used as comfort objects. Many children sleep with their teddy bears, and some even take them to school!
